Humanizing my school

The media has talked about EOCHS (East Oakland Community High) as if this is the worse school in Oakland or something, which it actually isn’t. I am an EOCHS student and I have attended east Oakland community high for two years now. What I have experienced here at this school is like no other and never will be like no other because this has been the best school that I have been to weather you believe it or not and weather I want to believe it or not. They are trying to shut the school down and I have thought long and hard about the next best places for a school that I could go to but there was no school that I thought would be the right school for me rather than here. I thought about how I wouldn’t want to go to another school like CastleMont high, Oakland Technical high school, and even skyline high. It made me think I know that this school that I am going to is the best school for me right now. So why were people talking so bad about the school that everyone here has a great experience behind or has had a great experience behind once while attending this school. The school district and the media have played the oppressor in a major messed up role by trying to shut our school down. They know that we are going to benefit off of it and they cant help the fact that they know that we are the ones who are going to shine in the end so they are trying to hold us down by using the forms of dehumanization, structural violence. The neighbors use the media to dehumanizes our school. The neighbors are using the media so much that the is a way to set structural violence upon our school. They are talking so much but they don’t know what work we do in the classrooms. No, but then they do because that’s the reason that they are hating on us. EOCHS Is investing in our education not money wise but through the other side of life that we don’t hear about (REAL EDUCATION). Our school gives students individual attention which you don’t get in other schools because there is usually a lot of students in a normal school from 30-32 students. We have small classes which means more leaning. So, basically what I am trying to say is that the media says a lot which sometimes may be true but not everything isn’t they don’t know how things work at EOCHS.

Structural Violence

Structural Violence is the act of creating “unequal access to resources, to political power, to education, to health care or to legal standing”, by these institutions. People intend to use structural violence to punish you specifically but only because you don’t fit the oppressors rules that people use to run you. For example, say that you are a perpetrator in someone’s neighborhood and you don’t fit the rules that go with where you stand your ground this is where the structural violence plays the role. The neighbors start to do what they have to do to get you out of their neighborhood because you don’t fit their standards. People use structural violence as a way to say that you are replaceable with any other individual that the person has to deal with For example, the school that we go to which is East Oakland Community high school is being put under the threat of being shut down by the school district and they are trying to use structural violence to say that we are doing something wrong because of what the teachers are teaching us inside the classroom walls. The things that the teachers teach us in this school is nothing like boring normal schools where they teach us how to become oppressed. The school district doesn’t want us to learn a new way of learning and receive more that EOC has to offer rather than the districts bull. Their bull is the fake history and stuff that any other student learns in a regular school about the white people. Don’t they think that we want to learn something different things about our history and not the white peoples history. Structural has a major affect on people it has an effect through their race, age, and gender. Some of the people that I know go to my school. It effects them because if this school closes down most of the older people who go to this school who are already 18 wont be able to go to another school just because of the simple fact that they are 18. These people are friends that I know who face structural violence in East Oakland. As a matter of fact the whole EOCHS is facing structural violence. Young people are affected by violence like this because its like people don’t want to see other people have better things then them, its like people start to hate on other people when other people shine.

Experiencing Dehumanization

Dehumanization is when a person with a certain kind of power makes someone else feel less human or “inferior”. I used relationships and how men treats a women the way that they do because of what they have seen through different kinds of media. Some Men treat women like they are just objects as if they have no true meaning to being a real person. This example that I used distorts the real way that men are supposed to treat women.
Young people of color experience dehumanization everyday but the media tells all kind of people it isn’t just people of color who are told how things work in society. Almost everything that we know we learned through the media: how we see ourselves, to how we should look, etc. Young people in Oakland have experienced dehumanization through the example that I used, through stereotypes, urban race (urban race such as like people with color), etc. Some examples of stereotypes that young people go through in Oakland are if you have a white t-shirt on and your black people automatically think, “oh he must be from Oakland” or, ”they must sell drugs.” There are some people who have on white T’s who sell drugs out here in Oakland, but people take it too far and they just start to think that all people who are black and have on white T’s are a drug dealers. Another stereotype that people get coming from Oakland is that “the guys in Oakland are all cheaters and don’t do anything but stand on the corner selling drugs, hang out on the Corner with friends, and smoke weed. A major stereotype is when people die in Oakland. People automatically start to think, “Oh another killing caused by their own kind”, I have actually heard that statement by some people who aren’t even from out here. Most of these stereotypes counteract most young people’s lives. Not all people are doing bad things just because they’re accused of doing something. When young people of color are on a block people assume that young people of color are in gangs or just doing something bad. Young people have better things to do or worry about, rather than what the person thinks that the young person is doing. Yong people can write, take pictures, etc about the things that the things that they feel are wrong. Photography and writing can be used to expose the truth about people because it can show the real side of how people are usually portrayed wrong through the media. It can be used to humanize the people. It is important for these stories/Images to come from us because we are at least realizing the fake things that are being portrayed about people and our school. We know what’s wrong so we are going to talk about the problem and some how come up with a solution through writing.

My picture is Dehuminizing because it is taking all the real things about a relationship and making it fake turning something good into something totally negitive. The people that are being affected by these images are the real people who are in a relationship or who's going to be in a relationship. It's affecting the people who are real it's changing what people should really see in a relationship. The paparazzi is the ones who are benefiting off of the picture because they are taking pictures and not caring who sees the opictures snd how they see them. They just care about making money...
